Wordpower

Perhaps sometimes we need to receive a gift before we know how to give one? On my way to a meeting yesterday morning, with loads on my mind, I bumped into one of my neighbours. In exchanging a few quick words, she gave me a boost which kept me smiling for much longer than it took her to say what she did.

It's easy to forget how much of a difference you could make to someone's day with a one or two carefully chosen sentences, so why not set out to spread a little happiness yourself by doing so today?

  1. Yeah,
a kind word to the bakery seller who just told her colleague she had a headache, or just holding open the door for the next customer, saying, please come in. that helps others, hopefully, but very often it also comes back at once, you receive a smile, a surprised face, or even a "thank you". If more people thought like that...
    thanks for the hint, jon!

  2. I do agree. Just a few words can make all the difference if one is feeling low. They don't have to be meaningful or deep words either. Someone left me a message on my answerphone suggesting coffee while I was in France last week and sad though it sounds, I felt cheered to hear it when we got back.
She is a new acquaintance and knows nothing of my personal history. We've only met once before and it was very heartening to know she actually thought another meet up might be good. Amazing the power of a few words.

    1. doesn't sound sad at all Julia. I can relate to it, as similar things really make the difference to me, however small. eg. yesterday i bumped into two "acquaintances" (rather than friends) and they looked genuinely pleased to see me. Such a nice welcome, I was astonished and touched. Have to remember these things when I'm beating myself up for being so pathetic/failure, etc etc. !!

  3. I have been meaning to post something on here for a while. Now seemed like a good time. I have been reading your blog every day for about the last eight months. I find your wise words interesting and extremely helpful. So, I guess I just wanted to say thank you. And that I look forward to all the future gifts you have in store for your followers.
