Fuel with care.

As you'll find if you mix up the diesel and unleaded pumps, cars don't work with the wrong fuel.

We kind of know this, just as we're aware that babies aren't likely to take to spare ribs, and should remember that you must never, ever give dogs macadamia nuts.

So why, if we're this astute when it comes to the nutritional needs of cars, babies and dogs, do we seem to ignore that having a healthy diet is crucial to our own physical and mental wellbeing?

Why do we sometimes think it's fine to shovel down junk without expecting to see an associated decline in our health and all-round happiness?

Of course there's a lot of psychology surrounding what we eat and why. It can get complicated.

But one thing that generally holds true is the principle adhered to by computer experts, among others: garbage in, garbage out.

You'll have choices today about what you eat. Try to make as many sensible ones as possible.

Your mind and body will thank you, even if your willpower gets a bit challenged.

  1. On a rainy Sunday like today it's so tempting to eat comfort food and stay in reading the papers. But your advice is important as always. I don't think many of us will be eating beef ready meals from now on. Maybe all processed meals including quorn based ones may be not what they seem so we may be forced to eat more healthily. It's good news for hard working butchers.
I have just said no to some chocolate with my coffee as it's almost lunch time anyway and I got up late so breakfast was late. I think this was a sensible choice but my coffee didn't taste as good.

  2. It's very true but we often find an excuse for not sticking to it just remember how you feel after you do it that should be incentive enough

  3. I think it's easier to eat healthily once you make it part of your routine and accept that you don't need to deprive yourself of treats, just cut back on them - it's about disciplining yourself. This was a very relevant blog because what you eat or don't eat really has a massive effect on your mood. I'm off to eat a banana now :)

  4. "Macademia nuts" ( never heard of them ) however - also for dogs - NO to grapes
in their various manifestations, or chocolate...in it's manifestations !
It's O'K' Julia, but by now I am pretty sure you are not a dog, so next time you CAN have chocolate with your coffee - and I wouldn't blame you !( MY dog likes a wee spot of tea occasionally )

  5. ...just have to report my experience yesterday... I was feeling really miserable and angsty all day yesterday, low moodscope score, following some negative stuff at work the previous day. Worked the night shift last night, really felt down...but then visited the choc vending machine in small hours. One bar of Galaxy Caramel later (yummy!) and my mood really lifted, despite it being the time of day (well, night!) when I'm usually low... There must be something that had a physical effect: maybe the sugar boost, the positive emotional feeling from the taste, or the theobromine or whatever that chemical in chocolate is! I wish I knew what caused the uplift: I sometimes feel that my low moods are a result of something physical/chemical rather than purely "psychological".
